You'll have to look and see if iPhone 3 is Apple TV compatible...

Most of the newer devices are, but my ~6 year old mac won't work while my newer one will. All iPads seem to work.

That said, I don't think the stream will work on an iPhone or iPad (mostly flash, right?) so you might be stuck without a macbook.
