To be fair, from my vague memories of what I've read ...

... he starts off by speaking a lot of sense, talking about reasonable things in reasonable terms, with apparently fairly belevolent intentions. But then he makes some bizarre link to his religion, says it's all to do with GOd, and starts up about the lizards again.

I expect, if you switch off before the lizards he sounds quite reasonable.
