managers pretty much always are to be fair, and it's the league that dictates their fate not cups (did anyone suggest sacking Lambert for all the pitiful cup performances when he was in charge?).

He was in a no-win situation last night - many of the the same people claiming last night was irrelevant and makes little or no difference to their opinion would have been vociferously claiming last night's result proved them right and he had to go now if we had lost it.
