not sure if already said but i guess if you were trying to sign just one european to

a relatively unknown club, it wouldn't hurt your negotiations to have a whole load of speculation about a host of other big name (literally) Europeans that you were also trying to add to your squad. Would certainly create the impression you were building something big here that would be worth joining.
