Tablets and notebooks etc

I wanted to buy my daughter a fancy prezzy for her upcoming birthday, and decided on one of these, but when I googled them, and then went down to PC World and gawped at them, I was at a loss 'cos I don't really know what people use them for. I mean, I know what they do, obv, but other things do them better.

So, clearly, I'm looking at them the wrong way. What do you use yours for? Any I promise I do understand the idea of gadgets for their own sake, and the joys of toys etc, so I'm fine with it if that's all it's about.
