what subtlety have I missed there? He's implying either that a) working in an office is not a normal job, or b) people in offices are all right-on do-gooders who are out of step with 'normal' people.

Which is bollocks all the way round.

And I wasn't patronising you, I said you were too thick to use the correct words when doing one of your pretend bits of outrage at what someone has said/done.
