Oh, well, this wasn't a fruity smoke smell.
It was proper woody and earthy. Lovely.
I imagine it's off-cuts that are too small/odd/knotted to sell, they pile them up and burn 'em when the pile is big enough. They seem to have a fire every week or so. It's lush.
