can't afford players anymore, mainly due to the wages in English Premier League pushing up the wages everywhere else. In a league like Portugal there is no massive TV deal to pay the wages so they have to find other steam revenues and that's where third party ownership comes in, it means someone or a company far richer than the club can pay part of the wages and then take a nice profit later when that player is sold.
