FAO Meeky re Cuba

Go to the Rum factory, great experience, if I remember correctly!

Every Cuban has an aunt/mother/sister who runs the best restaurant in Havana/Varadero. The menu is the same wherever you go!

Don?t try and drive from one town to another. There are no and I repeat NO road signs! Difficult to know where you are, where you have been, which road to take etc. And the Cubans don?t speak English, even when you shout at them.

We were driving along a three lane dual carriage way, the A1 (three lanes in both directions), when all the other cars turned off. We carried on, only to find that the three lanes went into a lake! Three lanes also came out of the lake going the other way! We couldn?t see the far side of the lake to see if the road carried on! We were trying to get from Havana to Trinidad. Also tried to go over the mountains in a hire car, not a smart move! Don?t forget, it?s huge island over 1,000 kilometres long.

We went to the swamp area to see Cuban crocodiles. Made the mistake of going to a crocodile farm! Not pleasant.

We then drove from Trinidad to Varadero. Great sandy beaches, with few people on them. the beach was flat golden sand, flat and unnervingly still. Very few birds to be seen, not even the ubiquitous turkey vultures.

Having said all that we had a great time with great adventures.
