The reduced number of European entries in early 90's was because of the Euro ban

We'd been kicked out of Europe when English clubs consistently won trophies and made finals so we had the max No of entries. When English clubs were allowed back in we had to start with the minimum and build up our record again. Hence only 1 European Cup place for the league champions. 1 Cup Winners Cup for FA cup winners and 2 UEFA for league runners up and League Cup Winners.

We qualified because Arse won both cups so they took the Cup Winners Cup Place and we got UEFA. Poor old Sheff Wed got nowt.
