Its similar to how Formula 1 used to be

With 10 points for a win and 8 points for 2nd.

A driver in 2nd with say 5 laps to go, wouldn't risk chasing down (and potentially crashing while trying to overtake) the leader for the sake of 2 points which led to very boring races.
