Awesome post from someone on FB. Smells and DNA on smartphones?
ha ha
I was a talking to one of Leeds' many Chinese students in a bar last night. She told me that her uncle works for Foxconn and that they are currently working as business partners on the long rumored Facebook branded phone.
She told me that as part of an effort to provide a unique feature set they had developed what in Sci-Fi terms is usually referred to as smell-o-vision. This is the long vaunted idea of using a miniature on-chip chemistry lab to analyse and reproduce smells. The technology has been around for decades, it was just the matter of shrinking down the components. The frequency of hipsters taking photos of their food with Instagram has given Facebook and Foxconn the incentive to carry out this R&D work. In fact, to test the tech, the analysis part of the chip has already been installed in some phones built by Foxconn.
However, what they are not telling you is this... Facebook has recently changed their privacy setting to allow them to to collect information about the DNA of their users. You can check this Help/Privacy Setting/Term and Conditions if you don't believe me. They are going to do this using these phones. Simply by using one of the phones, your DNA will be analysed and a copy sent to Facebook's servers where they can use it to filter targeted advertising. If you suddenly notice adverts appearing when you use Facebook that refer to health, medical or fitness products, you may already have been scanned.
Please share this message with your friends and please include the following disclaimer, which will protect you from this gross invasion of your privacy:
I hereby formally deny Facebook the right to store information about my DNA on their servers, to use such information for targeted advertising, or to pass it on to third party private or government organisations for any commercial, scientific or legal exploitation. This statement supersedes any made in the Terms and Conditions of this Website.
P.s. I know you all have questions about this so I'm going to answer them here: 1, Yes, she was hot. 2, A Gentleman does not divulge such details, but I was in a pretty good mood this morning, even though I seem to have pulled one of my lateral obliques.
