I know someone with a 42" LG

It's a few years old, but excellent set, really good contrast etc. As mentioned below, TVs (and monitors) are usually just branded, there are far fewer panel manufacturers. Being a Samsung/LG doesn't automatically make it good etc, but you often pay more for the big names for a similar product (Samsung, Sony, Panasonic being a bit more expensive than JVC, LG etc)
