Anything by T C Boyle, especially World's End and Water Music.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry is one of the best novels by anyone ever, I think.

Rupert Thompson: Divided Kingdom, or The Insult or Book of Revelations. Or his others. All good.

More whimsical? How about Jonathan Coe? Rotters' Club, The Closed Circle or What A Carve Up are all excellent.

Richard Price is good for American crime. Clockers is a good place to start.
