A minutes silence is for remembering someone and being alone with your thoughts.
A minutes applause allows the person to not have to think about anything but stupidly clapping their hands together. It won't be long before the match day program is filled with pictures of footballers homes and articles on how to work out if you favourite footballer really loves you.
