Mentioned my godparents yesterday in response to a similar threas - USAF fighter pilot, both very committed christians, classic All Americans with a couple of kids. Then they had a Downs baby and adopted her out rather than have to face up to the realities of a disabled child.
You see it over there a lot in just general day to day things - anything that doesn't fit the American Dream image they like to portray to the outside world is just brushed under the carpet (c.f. the shocking rates of relative poverty for the supposed 'greatest county in the world'.)
That said, with the amount of disabled Iraq/Afghan veterans they must have working teir way through the system now, I'd hazard a guess they'll do a bit better over the next couple of olympiads.
