Spoilers

They left it open a little in case it got renewed, but I'm glad they didn't. It ends their perfectly

Have you seen Shutter Island? Where they think they have a breakthrough, then a day or 2 later the main character starts retreating back to wild fantasy explanations?

That's what the guy in Awake has been doing all series. Real events have existed in both worlds, but both worlds aren't completely real (and one isn't at all)

That leads you to the finale. He has a huge breakthrough with the case, which repairs his mind to show that he's brilliant detective. Then he manages to merge both worlds into one

As he does that (like shutter island), he gets a glimpse of reality. He walks into the room and his son says something like "oh there you are, I've been waiting ages for you". In that moment he's accepted the truth that his wife is the one that died, and he knows there's no mystery of the case left

But it's only temporary, because in this new reality (actual reality where he wakes up in the same place every morning instead of switching), in this new reality, although he's accepted most things, he's not 100% ready to let go of her

And on some level it's implied that it's his choice, rather than psychosis

Which is why it's best they go no further with it, because it's one writer's interpretation of moving on after a tragedy
