On what basis would we have been relegated in another 5 games? Purely hypothetical nonsense.

Whitbread was not our best defender. That was Martin. Fwiw, I think Bennett and Ward (yes, Ward) were also better. Zak, even though I liked him, was not good enough with his distribution and prone to errors.

Why will the league be better this season? Last year we thought Wolves would stay up, that Blackburn would be fine, and that Newcastle would struggle.

But, fine. That was your opinion and you're welcome to it. If you're constantly expecting the worst then eventually you won't be disappointed.
