If you read Why England Lose by Simon Kuper, research has been done - and the overwhelming majority of penalties go the opposite direction to taker's chosen foot, because otherwise he has to awkwardly open up body. So ashley cole goes right because he's a left footer and it's a more natural routine.
It's also all in the run ups. a straight one and it's really difficult for left footer to shoot left, or right footer to shoot right. Armed with that knowledge, keepers should be able to dive the correct way more often than not. Whether they then actually save them is another matter... I give you Robert Green.
