It depends - if the guy really wanted to go and he was needed

But okay - I accept your point - there is more of a grey area there in that it isn't a certainty that he would've gone - but in most cases the manager would ask the player his opinion if whether he thought he was fit enough or not and trust that - if Safri said he wanted to go and thought he was fit enough, then it is difficult to stop. If Worthy said no, then Safri might have got royally pissed off with him. It's a very difficult one. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Personally I put it down to bad luck rather than bad judgement by the manager. But that doesn't excuse Worthy from not strentghening the midfield at the start of the season.
