Availability issues.

Tbf I don't think there's any differentiation between the various open source microcontroller boards, in terms of geekery. If you're buying any of them you're getting significant geekpoints.

In fact, you might argue, given the mainstream exposure given to the raspi at its launch, it's less geeky than the netduino or arduino platforms.
