FWIW... I use domainmonster to manage my domains, so they are always in my control/ownership and are easy to point to most webhosting companies. I use Webfusion as my hosting company, where I have a reseller account which gives me plenty of capacity for hosting.
I suppose 1&1 are ok if you like the ability to build your website through their interface. But ecommerce is a bit pricy.
Have you looked at something like Joomla or WordPress? I?ve got some spare capacity if you wanted to have a play......
