The board are in a lose/lose situation
They didn't give him permission and he has given his resignation. Had they granted permission the fans would have accused them of not putting up enough of a fight to keep him.
The best thing for all parties is to thank him for what he has done, send him on his way and leave McNally to get us the best possible compensation deal.
