Stainless Steel Rat?

popular scifi books back in the ermwhenwasit 80s? 90s? SciFi with the accent heavily on the Fi, which is why I could read them. Loads of fun. The author would paint the hero into some unbelievably tight corners and then get him out in a second or two, thanks to some bit of technology you weren't aware he had.
