theres ya answer! (though it benefited thatcher politically at the time and brought the country together, plus it signalled the end of a facist military dictatorship in argentina which had murdered over 40,000 of its own and signalled the start of a democracy there).
Not to mention ensure the 3500 islanders maintained their identity and culture, free to self rule and choose their OWN future.
