Eric Gates, although a gap-toothed mullet-wearing scummer...now co-hosts the football phone-in on Century Radio North-East (he's the Sunland legend along with Malcolm MacDonald for the Jawdees and Bernie Slaven for the Boro) and he does quite a good job IMHO. Think he's very much cleansed of any blue now.
