a bit of help/your opinions required please

as you may know i'm a right technophobe - have the chance to buy an ipad one below latest model - was thinking of getting it for my 12yr old - he is always on internet, plays lots of games and occassionally does his homework on laptop - would an ipad be suitable for him?????
