close but no cigar

Strong and direct, Stewart shot to fame at Huddersfield Town, after starting his career with Bristol Rovers, where he scored a hatful of goals before becoming Ipswich's record signing.

Excellent in the air and boasting a good touch, he is capable of scoring much more than just a typical target man's goals - he has weighed in with his fair share of 25 yarders and subtle finishes.

Holds the ball up very well and has no shortage of vision when it comes to bringing team-mates into the game.

There were doubts over Stewart's ability to adapt to the Premiership but his excellent performances during the first-half of the 2000/01 season led to him being touted for an England call-up. Netted a brilliant 21 goals that term as Ipswich finished fifth in the top flight in their return season.

The 2001/02 campaign was a completely different story for both Stewart and Ipswich. The striker missed much of the early part of the campaign after breaking his cheekbone in a 'training ground incident'.

On his return, he failed to find his form of the previous term and netted only ten goals. Ipswich would be relegated, and then need to cut costs for life in the Premiership.

Stewart earned a move back into the big time when he signed for Sunderland in August 2002 for ?3.25million, penning a three-year deal at the same time as Tore Andre Flo.

The player scored 37 goals in 93 games for Ipswich.

Which is why I find it strange he wants to join their rivals.
