My take on Saturday
With hindsight the team selection badly misfired, but at the same time a lot of it was understandable.
Playing Steer backfired, but not one of us was moaning about him after WBA, and given that he did probably more than anyone else to get us through that it's difficult to see how Lambert could have left him out for this one.
As it happened we went in with what was probably a second string back four - but that was forced on the manager through injury, and again the decision not to risk Naughton seems understandable.
Midfield was where it really went wrong. When the diamond has worked we have had "strong" players on the flanks (Lappin/Smith, Surman/Crofts) by playing two wingers it was always possible that the midfield would be overrun. And that's what happened. What was disappointing was that the remedy to hand, the obvious move was to replace Hoolahan with Johnson and go 4 4 2. It'sodd that it didn't happened. We would have been competitve in midfeld with two wingers supplying the creativity.
Up front it went wrong as well. Morison works best on his own, or with another target man - usually Holt. So to me the substitution would have been to take Jackson off and put Alby on.
But there we go, Lambert got it wrong.
