It's a very rich country thanks to the oil, but most people have nothing. Whenever I go I get driven airport>hotel>office, and never get 'out and about'. Rich people tend to live in gated compounds with armed guards - not nice. Ghana next door is completely the opposite, really relaxed nd welcoming. I know loads of great Nigerian people, and as a client our users there are fantastic. My claim to fame is arriving in Lagos once and, thanks to a single entry visa (used) which I thought was a multiple, getting deported on the next flight. May be a different experience of you are visiting friends/family, especially away from Lagos, but I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist destination otherwise.
