You don't have to live in the middle of it to work in it
i pitched up in St Albans whe I moved job to the City. Cheaper on the housing front (but dearer than most of the rest of the country) and only 20 minutes by train into Kings Cross. The wife still does this commute.
Pluses and minuses to everything and it depends on your work, but generally you'll get more opportunity to move to bigger and better things if you hang around there for a while.
Cockneys are c**ts though.
