But in Italian maritime law there is a sliding scale of punishment, if a captain is found to have left his ship with people still on board.
Failed to leave the vessel last: 2 years in jail
Failed to leave the vessel last, and the vessel is lost: 2-8 years in jail
Failed to leave the vessel last, and it carries passengers: 3-12 years
