I don't really understand the criticism of Bates (over this transfer at least)

He's out of contract at the end of the season and would leave for nothing as he's 23. Surely it's better to get a couple of million for him now than lose him for bugger all in the summer? Leeds fans are deluded, but we all knew that already.
