... you'll download them off whereever you're buying them from, and you'll have them on your hard-disk.
Say for the sake of argument you get an iPod rather than a competitor, you'll also get iTunes software, which sort of manages all the music files on your hard-disk and lets you transfer them to your iPod as and when required (as well as having links into the apple website to pay for and download more stuff). I imagine that other mp3 player manufacturers have similar set-ups.
