For me, Dempsey has grown with age. Thought he was over rated when younger, but

in recent years has become a far more clever footballer.

I often wonder whether it isn't grassroots which is missing in the US. I see it the other way around. We send our best youth poof rugby players to High Schools and Colleges in the US on scholarships (rare but the best do manage). But they can be every bit as good athletically as anybody on the same team, yet are clearly behind simply because they only started getting involved in the sport when they were early teens, whereas the yanks have been immersed in it since a very early age, with higher level coaching around them.

Perhaps if the MLS does grow or maintain its size we'll start seeing that emerging from the US in the next decade or two
