Indeed - sharing a train with scousers really isn't an appealing thought.

I'm lucky enough to be working a 5 minute drive from work - and to be single so I can just up and move to where I next decide to work. I did my commuting going from Stoke to Coventry every day for 2 years (as well as a 6 month contract in High Wycombe - 3 hours each way) so am glad of the rest.

Same as you, if my job was more secure then I'd get a newer more economical car - but it'll have to wait.

As regards trains, I must admit I do quite enjoy getting on the train (went to London on one last night) but there's no way I could commute on them daily
