Not if you treat it right.
Spreading butter on bread is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. You have to make sure you're on a very flat surface, and your utensil is nice and wide to cover the maximum surface area with each stroke. Then make sure you warm everything up nicely. Should then spread like a beauty and not tear.
