Football-wise, 'The Ball is Round' by David Goldblatt is brilliant.

It's very, very long - around a thousand pages - but is a well-researched and beautifully written global history of football from the public school games of the 1800s to the 2006 World Cup. Lots of politics and social history in there as well - read it recently and found it an absolute joy.

Simon Reynolds's book on Post-Punk is pretty decent too.
