Finished watching Unforgiven, all of it. It doesn't make sense. ...

He didn't take the money back to his children so it wasn't worth doing in the first place. I don't understand as why did he do it in the first place? Never watched all the film but it doesn't make sense. So he just dies? Why does he not go back to his farm with the children? Stupid film. Should have kept to the gun fights.
