very true
People who don't attend games usually hear one thing from the game or a report which mentions "so and so missed the header which led to the goal" or whatever, and that one incident isolated is what they base their view of the game on. Hence the whole "he's rubbish" even though for the rest of the game he probably did really well.
Plus I've noticed when you attend a game you are genuinely more sympathetic to the players as you've seen how hard they've tried etc.
