He picked up a bad injury in pre-season training before his first season

Tore a calf muscle running up sand-dunes with the squad. Took him 3-4 months to get better and whoever was their manager at the time thought that he didn't work hard enough to get fit (Kents? lack of effort? surely not)

So he was well down the pecking order by the time he was fit again
