This is how it's done:

They get a list for each year. 6 lists in total to last 6 years. The names run in alphabetical order depending on when they occur, and go from male to female in that sequence (eg. Alan, Betty, Carl, Donna...)

If there are more than 26 hurricanes in a year they use the Greek Alphabet, so you'd have Hurricane Alpha, Hurricane Beta, Hurricane Gamma, Hurricane Delta...

A Hurricane that is particularly devastating will not have it's name used again. Eg. Hurriance Andrew, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Rita will not be used ever again.

And that's about all there is to it!
