Talking of the Alternative vote

can anyone explain the pros and cons of this system because depending on which paper you read it`s either

1. A yes vote will let in parties like BNP.
or
2. A no vote will comdem most of us to basically never having a proper vote.

I would just like to make my own mind up based on some proper facts if at all possible
