The Iraqi Interior Ministry had ordered their release under Iraqi law. The Iraqi police had ignored the order (note the local commander claims to only control 25% of the force). The Army had information that the Iraqi police had handed the soldiers over to a local militia. The Army stormed the police compound in order to ascertain the whereabouts of the soldiers.
