FAO : Fierce Panda re Munich
Too bad that you're missing out on Oktoberfest! Munich's a fantastic city with plenty to do. Transport is easy, u-bahn can take you to any part of the city, ticket machines are in the u-bahn and usually with an English translation. You can see most of the city in a couple of days, I'd recommend :
Englisher Garden - enter around Munchner Freiheit and walk towards the hofgarten and odeonsplatz. Check out the seahaus or chinese tower if the weather's good and grab a wurst/hendl and a mass. As you get nearer to the city, there's a river with an artificial surfing wave.
If you walk to Munchner Freiheit, the area around the Odeonsplatz/university and the siegestor are nice. Plenty of cafes/bars.
Olympic park - Definitely worth a visit. BMW world is by the u-bahn and the park itself is nice. Views from the olympiaturn are incredible on a clear day. The observation deck should still be open that time of year.
Marienplatz - center of the city, main shopping strip goes towards karlsplatz. Check out the frauenkirche, ratzhaus and the market. The walk up to sendlingertor is nice. Some excellent beer halls here as well.
Hofbrau is a little touristy but a lot of fun. Alternatively the Hackerhaus, Augustiner keller (best beer!!) and my favourite the weisesbrauhaus. They do get busy and you'll have to share a table but it's a lot of fun. As I say, weissesbrauhaus was my favourite. The food is excellent (traditional) and the beer is superb. Check out the different weis biers, they export tap 7 (original) but the rest are only sold here as far as I know. Also the supermarkets sell beers for less than a euro, if you're driving you'd be stupid not to bring back a case of augustiner!!
Museums - don't bother with the deutsche museum. It's like the science museum. Intersting for about 5 minutes but then I was stupidly hungover! There's a museum district not far from the center around konigsplatz. The Pinakotheken was my favourite. Alternatively, check out the residenz at odeonsplatz.
Nymphemberg palace is in the city, the gardens are nice and the tour is interesting. Outside Munich If you have the time you may want to get out to the Neuschwanstein which is about 2 hours drive south. Andechs is nice, also very good beer! If you're into ski-ing/snowboarding there's some excellent resorts a short drive away.
There's probably more but damned if I can remember I mostly spent my weekends drunk! Check out wikitravel, that would help. Hope you have a good time!!
