I Suspect...

It hasn't only been Burnley that has enquired about him.

As has already been said on here, maybe he isn't going there (thus "not adding" to the club statement) but, as there is other interest, he isn't going to say he's staying either.

I do wonder if West Ham and even, possibly, Liverpool, have made enquiries as well and these are ongoing, purely speculative between agents and representatives bla bla bla (essentially as both clubs still have their Mangers at the moment) but both club and PL are aware of them?

Fighting "tooth and nail" suggests something a little more than just Burnley being after him.

Possible replacement? Easy. Martin O'Neill. He has long said he has "unfinished business" here, he has the connection with McNally and I do believe that, after Celtic and Villa, he'd relish being at a club where he can over achieve again, a'la Leicester.
