The most important factors are never mentioned........... ..
(1) Ability to control ambient light.
Contrast ratios vary between your ability to control light.
If you can get a pitch black room then great.
(2) Room size/ projector positioning is critical in projector choice.
DLP projectors normally have small windows of adjustments.
They are normally the best choice but each model has a different offset angle
If you say have a really short ceilling (8ft or less) its critical you chose a projector with a lower offset or you will have to keystone the piss out of the picture and it will look poorer for it.
There are also technical/visual problems with certain projectors.
A small % of people have problems with DLP projectors because of their eyes.
Its called rainbow effect.
You can make some big mistakes with projectors.
But on the plus side you can buy a decent manual screen for about $100 and currently good projectors have never been cheaper.
(1) Firstly tell me if the room you plan to use has the ability to cut out most of the ambient light.
(2) tell me your rough budget for projectors/screen and sound system. (FWIW its possible to put a decent system together for less than $1000, i did it for a friend)
(3) tell me the rough dimensions of the room including the height of the ceiling.
Tell me how far you plan on having the seating from the screen.
From this I can tell what screen size is best and then what projector is best given your budget.
