They were one of the regular top 6 for a bit.

That's where Liverpool have been the last couple of seasons. Struggling to hold on to the Champion's League places, and their best players... signing players of a slightly lesser calibre (Konchesky etc)... boardroom troubles... fan disquiet... It's quite similar. When a "club legend" takes over as manager after they sack Hodgson it could all fall into place.
