Ely Mubbles

Jeremiah Isaiah Jehosophat Mubbles (1827-1853), usually known as "Ely" Mubbles, was born in Wardy Hill, the youngest of 23 children. Raised in extreme poverty, Ely soon proved himself intellectually superior to anyone in the Fens, learning to count beyond 13 at the tender age of 22 and mastering 3 syllable words byb the age of 30. Such prowess was soon noticed and he was prenticed to a Master Cow Felcher in Witcham Toll in 1843. His talent for carving turnips into amusing shapes then brought him to the attention of the Worshipful Company of Fengibbons and he joined its Ely Lodge in 1848. Rising rapidly through the ranks he was elected Grand Arch-Gibbon of Ely in 1851 after beating the previous incumbent to death with a sack full of rotten carrots. Author of innumberable pamphlets attacking change, furreners and taxation, he was greatly loved by the simple folk of Ely, who worshipped him as a god and believed that their sick children could be cured by being held in his shadow. His untimely death came through a surfeit of snakebite and pickled eels. He is still venerated in many local shrines and 18 October is celebrated as "Ely Mubbles Day", when fen-dwellers sacrifice hedgehogs to his memory.
