"behind the ball" is the same as "behind the player when he kicks it"

obviously as offside comes in when the ball is struck. If you are level OR behind your opponent when he passes to you, you are onside.

Its always been the case and would be pretty stupid if not! Basically, if you were clean through and the defence was standing on the halway line, the player would otherwise have no alternative but to take the ball on himself! But obviously thats not the case...
